In wanting to share some holiday cheer, Ellen shares some of her thoughts on interior design. Make a cup of hot tea, get comfortable on the sofa, and join in our interview: Ellen tells, “I began my career in interior design in 1977 in Laurinburg where my husband was President of St. Andrew’s College. From my interior design business, I transitioned into the retail world. When we moved from Laurinburg, I opened up a shop in Southern Pines, then a second in Southern Pines and one in Pinehurst, then one in Blowing Rock. At one time, I had five shops; I’ve been in retail for a long time and have 30 years experience as an interior designer. In calling Moore County home... Because of my husband’s work, we’ve lived all over the South East, but we enjoy our small town living. I’m a small town person; however, the area is growing so very quickly. Tell me about your family. Our four sons live all over; one lives in Charlotte, two in Florida, one in Arkansas. One is in the restaurant business. One is VP of marketing for a company. One is a Jack-of-all-trades who just completed a saltwater fly fishing lodge in the Bahamas. One has his Ph.D. and is in private school administration. And grandchildren? I have eleven. So let’s talk design. Favorite way to decorate your home for the holidays? I like to decorate with the colors that are already incorporated into the home as I like for everything to coordinate. What about decorating for Thanksgiving? For Thanksgiving, I concentrate on the dining room, especially the dining room table. I love using a really big, artificial turkey as the centerpiece, and then I decorate all around it. And I don’t put up on my tree until after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving family tradition? We always enjoy the meal, as the food is the tradition— turkey, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, rice, dyed cooked apples (that goes back to my parents), and giblet gravy, my boys love this. Ellen laughs, I really don’t like to cook; the food is always the last thing I accomplish. I’d much rather decorate than cook. Favorite holiday? Christmas. Do you have a favorite family tradition at Christmas? When our sons were small, we always had lots of presents for them, shared wonderful breakfasts, and opened packages a certain way—one at a time. Favorite design elements for Christmas? You don’t have to over-decorate for the holidays, but definitely use a real tree with special ornaments. I have always enjoyed having a tree in the den and one in the living room. Friends give me poinsettias, so I use those around the house; I always do a fresh wreath and decorate the mantle. If I have to change out greenery during the holidays, then I’m not afraid to do that. I gather the greenery clippings when I buy my tree. Do you have a favorite design element in helping others? No, I always find out what my customers are comfortable with, because they are the ones who live with the finished design. I’m not a designer who says it’s my way or no way. Your inspiration for design? When I go to market... I get my inspiration from market. I find inspiration in magazines, but I spend time thinking about the design most of the time. Favorite design style? I like eclectic. Design philosophy? I listen more than I talk p.24 The Pinehurst Gazette, Inc. No. 124 because I want to hear what my clients are saying.
