Decades before Americana became the term to describe hard to categorize music, Delbert McClinton was preforming his own blend of rhythm-and-blues, rock, soul, and honkytonk. McClinton became a staple of modern blues, recording dozens of albums for different labels, adding a top ten hit of his own, 1980’s hit, “Givin’ Up for Your Love”, and winning a Grammy for his 1991 duet with Bonnie Raitt, “Good Man, Good Woman.” He won another Grammy in 2006, this time for Best Contemporary Blues Album for “The Cost of Living”. Delbert went on to connect with Tanya Tucker on the song “Tell Me About It”, which sent him to the highest levels of the country charts. When you see Delbert McClinton, you’re seeing someone who is not so much carrying on a tradition as securing his status as an American original. tybee island pirate fest | buccaneers bulletin | tybeeisland.com 9 DELBERT McCLINTON
