(L-R) Richard Gonzmart ’71, John Oliva ’60, Barry Neuburger, Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J., Joe Caballero ’86, Jack Knipe ’17, Joe Capitano Jr. ’84 n a warm and sunny early summer morning, accompanied by the student orchestra outside the front entry of the 60-year old administration building, a beautiful Groundbreaking Ceremony offi cially set everything into motion. After years of planning, the eagerly anticipated Phase I of Jesuit High School’s Campus Master Plan was launched, kicking off a busy summer of progress at Jesuit. The Groundbreaking Ceremony brought together faculty and staff, and many school supporters, as school leadership spoke about the historic master plan and the ‘For Greater Glory’ capital campaign making it all possible. Jesuit president Fr. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. bestowed a blessing, followed by the ceremonial shovelsin the-dirt groundbreaking, which included Fr. Hermes; Board of Trustees chairman Joe Caballero ’86; campaign co-chairs Joe Capitano Jr. ’84, Richard Gonzmart ’71, and John Oliva ’60; 16 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2016 J principal Barry Neuburger; and student body president Jack Knipe ’17. Soon thereafter, Batson-Cook, the master plan construction manager, began work on Phase I. This fi rst phase includes two spectacular new structures: a two-story, 32,000-square foot Administration and Student Services building (see rendering on p. 17), the face of campus along Himes Ave, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross at the heart of campus (a chapel rendering is on the cover page). Phase I is expected to be completed in late 2017 or early 2018. Construction developments reshaped campus this summer. A beautiful new Student Commons was created in the courtyard area between The Al Lopez Sports Complex and the MPR. The statue of St. Ignatius sits at the center of the commons, which is adorned with relocated trees from the previous commons area. The new commons established an ideal gathering hub for Jesuit students throughout the day. The north end of campus is now a new faculty and staff parking lot, spanning the length of the Jesuit residence out to the east end of the property. The vastly expanded parking has more than alleviated the temporary loss of parking due to construction. This fall, a new state-of-the-art chiller plant will be completed, upgrading the air conditioning in all facilities throughout the campus. When Phase I is completed, Jesuit will look to begin Phase II.
