FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Parents, Alumni, and In September of 1916, the following lapidary phrases, written in elegant penmanship (and in Latin, of course) appear in the school history: • Sep. 5 – Schola Brevis • Sep. 20 – Missa Spiritus Sancti Just a few weeks after we started our 118th school year with the traditional Schola Brevis (a half-day of classes), and as we prepared for this year’s Missa Spiritus Sancti, Mass of the Holy Spirit (delayed a week by Hurricane Hermine), I was reminded of the many customs and rhythms of school life that link us with the Jesuit faculty and students of the past: Convocation, the Alma Mater, Blue Tide, Thanksgiving Drive, the Mission Drive, retreats, athletic contests, and so much more. Later that same school year of 1916-17, the faithful house historian notes (on January 13) that the students went over to the “new school building.” The building was, he observes without further comment, “practically completed.” In other words, even 100 years ago, in the midst of daily studies, sports, and recreation, our students were also dealing with change and navigating the construction of new facilities. Then as now, the Jesuit fathers depended on the support of the community to invest in the school so that the customs and institutions that defi ne school life could take solid root and be renewed and extended into the future. Since last September’s public announcement of our capital campaign, ‘For Greater Glory,’ our community of parents, alumni, and friends have responded with enthusiasm and great generosity. Because of this response, Rev. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. we have been able to increase our original goal of $35 million to 2 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2016
