he beat goes on: This spring the Tigers captured the District title for the 21st time in head coach Joe Curtis’ 22 seasons. At the District Tournament all fi ve singles players reached the fi nal as Jesuit outdueled Robinson. Jimmy Emslie ’18 claimed the District title at No. 1 singles, Gantt Meredith ’16 won at No. 3, and Christian Gonzmart ’18 prevailed at No. 4. Also, No. 2 Gunther Mosesmann ’18 and No. 5 Ramon Martinez ’19 both were District runners-up. Jesuit swept the doubles, with Emslie-Meredith claiming the No. 1 title, and Mosesmann-Martinez winning at No. 2. In the Region Final, Jesuit avenged a regular season defeat to Lake Wales by winning the fi rst four matches to claim the Region crown and earn another State berth. he Tigers reached the Region Final at North Marion before succumbing 3-2, just one game shy of the State Tournament. In head coach Miguel Menendez’s second season Jesuit fi nished 24-6, winning the District title behind the strong pitching of Jack Anderson ’18, who was named fi rstteam All-County. Big wins included a 3-0 triumph at Class 7A State fi nalist Venice, and a sweep of Tampa Catholic. Anderson, called up from JV due to injuries, became the ace, going 5-2 with a 0.60 ERA, 54 K and 9 BB in 58 innings, and Jeff Hakanson ’17 (45 K in 31 innings) was the top reliever. Infi elder Steven Lugo ’16 had a teamhigh .408 batting average, and Miami signee Nico Baldor ’17 led with a .556 slugging percentage. Wins over Oviedo Hagerty, Tampa Catholic, Tampa Prep, Newsome, and Houston Strake Jesuit highlighted the season. Jake Lemon ’18 (27 goals, 38 assists), who has verbally committed to play Division I lacrosse for Canisius, Joe McGonnigal ’18 (37 goals, 10 assists), and John Bencivenga ’16 (30 goals) paced the attack, while Michael McHale ’16 (36 ground balls, 35 takeaways), Seth Cashen ’18 (29 ground balls, 19 takeaways, verbal commitment to Division I Bellarmine University), and Cade Myers ’19 (46 ground balls, 15 takeaways) anchored the defense. Jake Lemon ’18 TENNIS TRACK & FIELD J esuit was reclassifi ed from Class 2A to 3A in track & fi eld, but that didn’t stop the Tigers from earning a seventh District title in seven seasons under head coach Andy Wood ’92, and their 16th in the past 17 years, narrowly defeating runner-up Hillsborough 139-134. Jesuit surged ahead of Hillsborough in the second-to-last event and held on to win while advancing 14 athletes to the Region Meet. Individual District champions were John Robbins ’18 (mile and 2-mile) and Omar Dibba ’18 (pole vault), and Travell Harris ’17 set a new school record in the 100 meters (10.70). On Senior Night, the 4x100 relay team of Jacob Newton ’16, Griffi n Rain ’16, Seku Morris ’16 and Harris broke a 13-year-old school record with a time of 43.01.
