Barmaid Blessings TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | OCT 2016 11 By Pam Smith Once again, at 4:48am, inspiration strikes upon me. I don’t know if it’s the peace and quiet this time of the day, or just the needed “unwinding” after a busy Friday night at work. Whatever the reason, I write. II am such a fortunate person to be afforded to have the friends (no…extended family) that I have. I believe they would agree. II see a lot of people who drink to forget and some who drink to remember. In some cases, I assume that it’s too painful to deal with when they are sober. A wise person once told me “If you want to know the truth, ask a man when he is drinking; not when he is sober.” I believe this to be true. Drinking seems to make people more open-minded to speak whatever is on their mind. The bonus is they might not remember the next day! But because they got if off their chest and mind, they feel better for it. It’s unfortunate when a person feels they can only open up to a total stranger (bartender), because they don’t have a friend (extended family member) to rely on to listen. And I might not tell them what they want to hear, I may not understand what they actually need, but for the most part I listen and try to help put things in perspective. So here’s my toast: “Here’s to all those friendly bartenders, The ones with a barstool for a couch, Who take the time to listen, And help those in need out.” My toast to my fellow bartenders. Thank God for extended family! (Clue: The last time anyone saw Eric he was on his way to work.)
