12 TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | OCT 2016 Between Pirate Fest and Halloween, October is the month when Tybee gets invaded by pirates and goblins alike. Whether you’re swilling mead with your fellow scallywags or sneaking the best candy from your kid’s trick-or-treating cache, mark your calendar to join us next month for the inaugural Interactive Art Street Party on Saturday, November 5, from 2 to 5 pm on Tybrisa Street. The Main Street Design Committee spent numerous hours crafting the mural guidelines for the city a couple of years back. Under these guidelines, the committee recommended that the board partner with Tybee Arts Association and Tybrisa Beach Resort to undertake the first ever public mural project for the city along the long wall (blank canvas) on Tybrisa Street. Elements that highlight the essence of Tybee’s history, nature and culture, and key iconic places are going to be across a series of three 4 x 12 panels. The first one will be unveiled during the November 5 party. The remaining panels will have similar celebrations surrounding their respective unveilings. Tybrisa Street will be closed to vehicular traffic for the celebration, and a variety of family-friendly activities are planned, from live painting demonstrations, to chalk sidewalk art, to a kid’s paint brush relay and more. Development Authority/Main Street board member, Sarah Bernzott, headed up the project, sourcing donations for everything from the MDO panels to the specialty paints, varnishes, and anti-graffiti coatings needed for such a public, sun-soaked space. Working closely with the Tybee Arts Association and their selected artist, Bonnie S., the layout was planned and brought before the board for a final review and the paint strokes began! We don’t want to spoil the unveiling, but trust us when we say you’re going to be blown away by the artist’s capturing of Tybee’s heart and soul for this work! So, mark your calendars for November 5 and let your friends know. If you have not yet seen the updates, check out Tybee Main Street’s FB page. (Clue: Caitlin Burns was throwing pineapples at the Poo’s sign to practice her position as pitcher on the local softball team.) Article contributors: Brenda Marion, Board Director / Promo Liaison and Chantel Morton, Executive Director This month brings my absolute favorite holiday, and Tybee Island is the best place to celebrate it. Because on Tybee, the entire island comes to one single street to celebrate. This year is particularly special to me because I just happen to be living on that street, Lewis Avenue. I’ve been celebrating my Halloweens on Lewis Avenue since I was a tiny tot dressed as Barney, the big purple dinosaur (there’s one you won’t see anymore). Now that I’m older, the best part of Halloween on Lewis is that it is absolutely a fun time for ANYONE no matter how old. Many of the houses offer adult beverages alongside their candy tables, be sure to stop by my place and see what David Jones and I are serving up. Of course don’t forget there’s also The Quarter Sports Bar & Grill at one end of the street. As for the kids, Lewis Avenue is definitely the safest place to trick-or-treat. The street is entirely closed to traffic with the Tybee Island Police blocking the Highway 80 entrance and The Tybee Island Firefighters blocking the other end. Be sure to stop and say hi to these great guys and thank them for keeping us safe so we can focus on the fun. Besides the road being blocked to traffic, there will be a strong police presence on both ends and walking throughout on foot patrol. There is nowhere else I would rather have my small kiddos on Halloween. We don’t just have Tybee residents out here on Halloween, you wouldn’t believe the incredible amount of kids we get out here on this fun night. Our wonderful Fire Department brings some candy by to the houses on Lewis but it is nowhere close to what it takes to make sure all the kids get plenty of treats. Please remember you are welcome to donate candy to the Fire Department for this exciting holiday event. Thanks in Advance! Now all I have to do is find a costume for me and the kids.
