LEARNING GOALS In this chapter you will: • Learn the meaning of the acronym SCUBA. • Learn about scuba certification. • Be introduced to NAUI Worldwide. • Learn about other NAUI courses. • Be introduced to some of the risks of scuba diving. • Understand your obligations for attendance, health, and fitness. • Understand why drugs, alcohol, and diving do not mix. Scuba diving is the most unique adventure sport on earth. In the underwater world, you can watch the delicate beauty of tiny fish as they dart around a colorful tropical reef. You can experience the thrill of swimming eye to eye with sea turtles, whales, or manta rays (figure 1-1). With very little training, you can shoot underwater video footage that will dazzle your family and friends. As a scuba diver, you can see history as you discover fabulous underwater treasures and lost sunken cities. Scuba diving is an adventure sport you can pursue almost anywhere in the world. From the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes to the tropical reefs of Australia, from the kelp forests of California to the rocky coast of the Mediterranean, where there is water, there is usually diving. As long as you are in good health and have the proper equipment and training, you can enjoy diving. Although it might seem that there is a great deal of information you must learn about diving, you do not need to be an expert to enjoy it. You can experience all the excitement of scuba diving by completing your NAUI Scuba Diver certification course. There are dives that are more advanced and challenges you can choose to experience later, but the basics of diving will enable you to begin your underwater adventures.
