Your NAUI Scuba Diver certification course will teach you the fundamentals of diving. You will learn the principles of selecting and operating your equipment, the effects of diving on your body, and basic information about your local diving environment. Once you have completed the course and your open water certification dives, you will be qualified to dive in conditions similar to those in which you did your open water certification dives. Different levels of diving certification signify special knowledge in diving. After you complete the NAUI Scuba Diver certification course, you will be eligible to take specialty courses to learn about the different special interest areas in diving. For example, you might want to take a course in rescue diving or underwater photography (figure 1-6). There are also courses in underwater hunting and collecting, night diving, and many other topics. Your instructor probably learned to dive in a course similar to the one you are taking now. In addition, your instructor completed additional leadership courses in running organized dives and diver rescue techniques. Before being granted an instructor certification, your instructor also completed a demanding course in instructional techniques and was required to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills to a panel of experienced diving instructors. Your NAUI Scuba Diver Certification card is just the beginning of your adventures in diving. It is your license to learn more about the underwater world. There is no one who knows everything there is to know about diving, but in diving, you’ll find much of the fun is in the learning. WHAT IS NAUI? Your NAUI Scuba Diver certification course is being taught by an instructor certified through the National Association of Underwater Instructors, more commonly referred to as NAUI or NAUI Worldwide (figure 1-7). NAUI was founded in 1959 and is one of the oldest and most respected diver certifying agencies in the world. You can take pride in your NAUI certification because NAUI courses are among the most thorough, routinely exceeding minimum industry standards. NAUI Courses In addition to teaching the NAUI Scuba Diver certification course you are currently taking, NAUI instructors also teach courses to further your diving education. Two of the NAUI courses you can take to continue your education are: • Advanced Scuba Diver • Master Scuba Diver NAUI Scuba Diver 6 Introduction FIGURE 1-6.
