NAUI Scuba Diver 198 Diving Activities LEARNING GOALS In this chapter you will: • Be introduced to some special interests you can develop in diving and how you can meet other divers with those interests. • Learn about some of the courses you can take to continue your diving education. By now, you have received (or nearly received) the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow you to enjoy scuba diving on your own. Soon you will earn the NAUI certification card that will be your passport to the underwater world. It has taken study and physical effort to develop the needed ability. You can be proud of all you have accomplished. Now it is time to look ahead. GETTING INVOLVED IN CLUBS Get involved with other divers right away. Local dive clubs are an excellent source for diving companions, information about the local area, and introductions to many diving activities. Be sure to ask about joining a dive club in your area (figure 9-1). FURTHERING YOUR EDUCATION The best way to remain involved in diving after this course is to continue your diving education. By completing the NAUI Scuba Diver certification course, you will be prepared to dive in conditions similar to those in which you were trained. There are many other aspects of diving you will need to learn or further develop. You must consider your initial certification as a license to learn how to dive. Experience and additional training are needed for you to dive under other conditions. The field of diving is always changing. Equipment is constantly being improved and new types developed. Discoveries even change our understanding of the effects of pressure on divers. Therefore, continuing education is important. You should subscribe to diving magazines, attend diving seminars and conferences, take refresher courses every year or two, and obtain the highest level of certification possible. All will help to keep your knowledge current. SPECIALTY COURSES To further your diving education, you can learn diving specialties by taking a NAUI-sanctioned Specialty Course. A few of the many specialty courses available are Night Diver, Rescue Diver, Cavern Diver, Nitrox Diver or Underwater Photographer (figure 9-2). While experience is a good teacher, it frequently gives you the test before the lesson. This results in frustration and wasted time. It can also be unsafe. To get the most from a diving specialty, and to get it quickly in today’s fast-paced world, complete a NAUI Specialty Course. This way, you will quickly achieve success and be able to take advantage of your NAUI instructor’s years of experience in your area of interest. THE ADVANCED SCUBA DIVER COURSE The Advanced Scuba Diver course introduces you to a variety of diving activities. It is designed for newly certified divers who desire additional training and an FIGURE 9-1. DIVE CLUBS OFFER NEW DIVING COMPANIONS AND INFORMATION ABOUT DIVING ACTIVITIES.
