NAUI Scuba Diver 10 Introduction fit for diving. To be in shape for a particular activity requires regular participation in that activity. The best way to stay fit for diving is to dive regularly, or swim with mask, snorkel, and fins. Remember that your ability to dive safely is decreased by inactivity. Before resuming diving after a layoff of one month or longer, you should re-establish your skills and fitness by pool workouts before any open water dives. Refresher courses offered by NAUI facilities and NAUI instructors also afford opportunities to polish skills, add new knowledge to the basics, and help restore fitness and skill proficiency. Refresher courses are highly recommended if you haven’t been diving in a while. Divers take pride in their health and fitness. It is essential to maintain your health and fitness if you want to enjoy the sport and reduce its risks. Use of Drugs and Alcohol Good health and fitness are important for diving safety, but use of drugs can lead to problems under water. Substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine, which alter your physiology and affect your ability to think clearly, should never be used before diving. Any such substance would be particularly dangerous if taken before diving. Avoid taking any over-the-counter or even prescription drugs that recommend you not operate machinery . Even if you are on medication prescribed by a physician, its effects under pressure are probably unpredictable, especially side effects. Complete your treatment before diving. Do not drink alcohol before diving. If you are ill and do not feel well enough to dive without taking a drug, you should not dive, even if you feel fine with medication. The effects of drugs can be changed by pressure in unpredictable ways. Medication can mask the symptoms of your illness, but that illness still exists.
