awkward and inefficient, your foot might cramp, and you might lose a fin. If your fin straps are oily or slippery from a lubricant used in manufacturing, wash the straps in mild soap and water to remove the oil. Leaving the straps oily can cause the straps to slip in the water and loosen your fins. Donning Your Gear When you are ready to go diving, and you have completed your site survey and dive plan, you don or put on most or all of your gear at the dive site. Depending on your gear, your wet suit is usually the first piece of gear to put on. Sit down when you don your booties to avoid falling, especially if you are on a rocking boat. Your feet and your booties must be either completely dry or completely wet for the booties to slip on easily. Your fins must be donned at the water’s edge. If it is possible to put your fins on while sitting, you will be less likely to fall. However, most of the time, you will have to don your fins while standing. Always use a figure-four position when donning your fins as follows: 1. Steady yourself by putting one hand on your buddy’s shoulder. 2. Cross the ankle of the leg closest to your buddy over the knee of your other leg (figure 3-3). Chapter 3- Diving Skills 3. Hold your fin by the side where the blade and foot pocket meet, or by the strap with the bottom facing away from you. 4. Put your foot in the foot pocket of the fin. 5. Slide the heel strap up and over your heel. 6. Turn around and repeat the process for your other leg. Avoid walking more than a short distance while you are wearing your fins because you can easily lose your Diving Skills 49 FIGURE 3-1.
