forward of your hip. 4. Repeat the process in steps 2 and 3 until you have all the weights strung on the belt. 5. Try the belt on to see the position of the weights. Be sure that you distribute the weights evenly on each side and leave the area of the belt that spans your middle back clear of weights. To keep the weights from shifting, you can put weight keepers, which are metal or plastic clips, between the slits in the weight to keep the weights from sliding. You can also put a twist in the belt as you thread it through your last weight to keep the weights from sliding off the belt. Ask your instructor for tips to keep your weights securely positioned on the weight belt. If you are using soft weights in a weight belt with pockets, distribute the weights evenly throughout the belt. If you have too much weight on one side and not enough on the other, you will tend to roll and not be able to easily stay in control in the water. The weights will keep pulling you to one side. DONNING SCUBA GEAR There is a specific order to donning all of your scuba gear before you get in the water. Your instructor will show you the way they want you to don your gear. One order is as follows. For obvious reasons, your diving suit must be put on first. Your scuba unit is next, followed by your weight belt. And finally your mask and fins. Putting your gear on in this order makes the process easy and fast, and ensures that your weight belt can be readily ditched, if necessary. Donning Your Diving Suit Depending on where you learn to dive, you might use anything from a dive skin to a dry suit. There are different specific procedures for donning each type of diving suit. Your instructor will show you the proper techniques for the suit you will be using. No matter which type of suit you are wearing, be sure you sit down when donning the bottom portion. This is especially important if you are donning your diving suit Chapter 3- Diving Skills on a moving boat. You usually don the bottom of your suit first, followed by your booties. The bottoms of the legs of your diving suit should then go over the outside of your booties. You don the hood and then the jacket. The hood tucks into the jacket of your diving suit. If the weather is warm, you want to be sure to set up your scuba unit and weight belt before donning your diving suit. If the weather is cold, you might want to don the diving suit first before you set up your scuba. If you get too warm with your suit on, be sure to cool yourself down by getting in the water or pouring cool water over your head and suit. Donning Your Scuba Unit A buddy pair must don scuba units as a team (figure 3-26). It is easier to don scuba gear when you work together because of the extra hands that are available to position hoses and straps. Diving Skills 59 FIGURE 3-26.
