Always breathe from your regulator when you are donning the scuba unit. When you are at the surface, you will slip under water as you pass the cylinder over your head and the regulator will give you a source of air. You must learn to refasten your waistband and buckles by feel. Before you refasten your waistband and clips, feel to be sure that your straps are not twisted and your hoses are not trapped. Work at a slow and steady pace when removing and replacing your scuba unit. You should be able you handle your equipment independently, but there is nothing wrong with asking your buddy for assistance if you have difficulty. An extra set of hands and eyes is useful and saves time. Removing and Replacing Your Weight Belt on the Surface and Underwater Handling a weight belt in the water can be awkward, but with practice, working with a weight belt is not as difficult as it seems. There are a few important points to remember when working with weight belts: • Always handle a belt by the free end to prevent the weights from slipping off the belt. • Gravity will pull the belt towards the bottom unless you support the belt with your body. • Keep your body in a horizontal position at all times when removing and replacing the weight belt. • Work at a slow and steady pace when removing and replacing the weight belt. To remove the weight belt to discard it or to hand it out of the water, use the following steps: 1. Undo the buckle and pull the tail of the weight belt free of the buckle. 2. Hold the free end of the weight belt in one hand and pull the belt completely away from your body. The weights will hang in a direct line towards the bottom (figure 3-63). 3. Release the weight belt. If you are handing the weight belt out of the water, be sure that the person you are handing it to has a firm grip on the weight belt before you let go. You use the same procedure to remove and replace your weight belt on the bottom as you do on the surface. Your instructor will show you the procedure they want you to use. If you use a right-hand release to your weight belt, one method to remove and replace your weight belt in the water is as follows: 1. Assume a facedown position in the water. 2. Undo the buckle and pull the tail of the weight belt free of the buckle. NAUI Scuba Diver 86 Diving Skills FIGURE 3-62.
