Some of the first performances of the T ‘Pensacola Philharmonic Orchestra’ were held in local venues like Pensacola High School, Blount Junior High School and area churches. It was the orchestra’s first conductor, John Borjes, that laid the foundation for the ensemble’s future growth stating, “I hope to demonstrate to this city that it is not necessary to go out of town to get good music.” The following decades provided the orchestra a great deal of momentum, but the orchestra still lacked an adequate performance space to allow the ensemble to reach new and larger audiences. In 1956, backed by the community’s craving for classical music, the Orchestra purchased Sacred Heart Cathedral, located on the corner of 9th and Jackson Streets. This move was a firm statement of permanence and commitment to the community. In 1981, the City of Pensacola and University of West Florida collaborated to completely renovate the historic Downtown Saenger Theatre where the PSO moved the following year in 1982. The new venue allowed, conductor, Dr. Grier Williams to share his musical vision with a larger audience and a new chapter of growth began for the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Peter Rubardt took the reigns as Music Director in 1997 and brought with him a new level of professionalism and artistic leadership that was contagious. In 2009, the historic Saenger Theatre added an orchestra shell that breathed life into the hall, making it a mainstay for Pensacola and a place where people could come together and have memorable musical experiences throughout the season. In 2015 the PSO launched “Beyond the Stage,” a transformative community engagement plan to serve children, families, and adult learners with new, innovative programs. Now entering its 91st season, the PSO continues to innovate and expand its programming to connect the community with the magic of music. Calendar of Events 26
