The Captain’s Walk Winery, which crafts classic wines and hard ciders in a New World style, offers tours and tastings in this beautifully restored vintage house. A DeLorean, one of the most striking and innovative vehicles ever made, is among the fully- restored cars on display at the Automobile Gallery where, according to its owner William “Red” Lewis, “the automobile is the art.” NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 | TAMPA BAY MAGAZINE 159 Young Packers’ fans line up, as they wait for each player to choose a bike to ride to the practice field, while conversing with its owner. TRAVEL Green Bay’s rich cultural heritage can be seen at places such as Heritage Hill State Historical Park, where 25 historic buildings are located, and at Hazelwood Historic House Museum, which was the Greek Revival home of one of the city’s early business and political leaders. The Neville Public Museum features Wisconsin’s history and art, while the Oneida National Museum enlightens visitors about this Native American culture. The fascinating National Railroad Museum showcases a 1924 Pullman sleeping car and the world’s largest steam locomotive. The Automobile Gallery covers 100 years of automobile history through the vehicles on display, which is each a work of art. A trip to Green Bay is not complete without trying some locally crafted beers and wines. These can be found throughout the town and during the well-attended Wednesday Evening Market. There is also a wide variety of restaurants in the town to please just about anyone’s palate. Wherever you go in Green Bay, the prevalence of green and gold never lets you forget that the Packers are the center of this community. Everything from city garbage cans to fire hydrants is in Packers’ colors. So, while in Green Bay, plan to take the our of the Packers Heritage Trail that features 22 bronze plaques to mark important landmarks in the team’s history. We opted to take the trolley tour, which let us ride comfortably by the sites, while listening to a live guided tour of the Trail’s history, highlights and anecdotes by a former Packers’ employee, who now owns and operates the trolley. This experience gave us a deep appreciation for what we saw in the Packers Hall of Fame in the Lambeau atrium. Its four carefully planted acres provide the opportunity to enjoy the glory of nature as laid out by man. The inspiring gardens and natural areas reflect the beauty of Green Bay’s four seasons. The charming town of De Pere is located a little further south of Green Bay on the Fox River. Its unique specialty shops and restaurants made us realize that there is more in Green Bay than football, cheese and bratwurst, even though many people think that is more than enough. 9 EDITOR’S NOTE: For more information on Green Bay contact the Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau at 1-888-867-3342 or visit www.greenbay.com.
