However, after serving in the Navy on a nuclear submarine, he was advised to go into business if he wanted to be able to raise a family, since the earnings of an artist tended to be low on the scale of human endeavor. He took that advice and spent the next 40 years in business and public life, where he became very successful. But his love of art never faded, and once he retired, he decided to return to that which he loved so much during his youth.
