25 Years of Memories The Florida Holocaust Museum By Aaron R. Fodiman Walter Loebenberg, who left Nazi Germany in 1939 to come to the United States and subsequently served in the U.S. Army during World War II, became a successful businessman in Pinellas County. However, he never forgot how fortunate he was to have escaped the Holocaust. He conceived the idea of creating a living memorial to those who suffered and perished under Nazi Germany. Along with other local philanthropists and community leaders, some who were survivors of the Holocaust or who had lost relatives, Loebenberg gathered a group of individuals who wanted to ensure that such atrocities would never happen again. The Florida Holocaust Museum stands proudly in downtown St. Petersburg where it is easily accessible to all who wish to visit it. The Florida Holocaust Museum staff is dedicated to teaching.
