THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA | 2016-2017 11 Stuart Malina’s ease on the podium, engaging personality, and insightful interpretations have thrilled audiences and helped to break down the barriers between performer and listener. Now in his seventeenth season as music director and conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and his fifth season as principal guest conductor of The Florida Orchestra, he was previously music director of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with many orchestras and festivals throughout the United States. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2007, conducting the New York Pops in an all-Gershwin tribute. In December 2016, he toured Russia for the second time, conducting concerts on behalf of the United States State Department. He also makes his debut concerts this season with the orchestras of Fort Worth and Long Beach. An accomplished pianist, Malina has impressive credits as soloist and chamber musician. Last season, he performed Rhapsody in Blue with The Florida Orchestra under the baton of Michael Francis, and this coming May, he will play Gershwin’s Concerto in F with the Harrisburg Symphony. As a composer and arranger, Malina has created dozens of orchestral works. On Broadway, he won the 2003 Tony award for orchestration with Billy Joel for the musical Movin’ Out and has served as associate conductor of the national touring company of West Side Story and conductor of the international tour of Charleston’s production of Porgy and Bess. Malina holds degrees from Harvard University, the Yale School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting with Otto- Werner Mueller.
