KIDSZOO.ORG february 2017 TASM ANIAN DEVILS ARE HERE! Get ready to meet Milton and Mischief — two endangered Tasmanian devils who arrived in September at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. The two male marsupials came here through the Australian government’s Save the Tasmanian Devil program. Nearly 70% of wild Tasmanian devils, which are found only on the Australian island of Tasmania, have died from a transmissible cancer known as Devil Facial Tumor Disease. Milton and Mischief are disease-free and are part of an “insurance population” should devils become extinct in the wild. The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of just six United States zoos to exhibit Tasmanian devils. The zoo has a long relationship with Tasmanian devils, housing 12 devils from 1987 to 2004 — more than any other U.S. zoo. One of these devils was Coolah, who was the last Tasmanian devil living anywhere in the world outside of Australia when he died in 2004. Cooperation among zoos and agencies around the world is key to saving species like Tasmanian devils, says Dr. Joe Smith, Director of Animal Programs. “The zoo is thrilled to have Tasmanian devils here once again,” he says.
