RECREATION PHOTO BY SUSAN SMITH Powerboats and pontoons, sail boats, kayaks, canoes and SUPs...you’ll find them and more on the many waterways in the Englewood area. Leisure boating is a very popular pastime here as experienced captains and novice sailors explore Lemon Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and the Englewood area’s many freshwater canals, creeks and lakes. If you don’t own your own boat, you can rent a kayak for a leisurely paddle up Coral Creek or explore the Gulf on a fishing charter with one of the area’s experienced boat captains. Florida ranks number one in the country for adult anglers. It seems that everyone you meet in Englewood has a story about the one that got away or the one that didn’t, and soon you will too. If you like to stay on dry land, there are enough golf courses to keep you swinging every day! Tennis players will find excellent courts in several public recreational sites, and there are also facilities at many clubs as well. EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS Englewood is a town that enjoys celebrating. In February there is the week-long Lemon Bay Fest - Englewood History with Zest, with a variety of events dedicated to the town’s history and founding families. The crowds come out to enjoy live music for the PODS Englewood Music Festival and also the F.A.M.E. concerts to support music education in our schools. The Halloween Safe Walk brings trick-or-treaters of ALL ages to Dearborn Street every Halloween, and the Christmas Parade is gaining popularity. There are several exceptional juried art shows each year, many arts and craft fairs, car shows and the annual Buchan Airport Fly-in. PHOTO JOE CHAN PHOTO BY TOM NEWTON 2017 19
