May/June 2017 GASPARILLA ISLAND 41 The Island School and Easter Seals. “This year, we added Easter Seals of Southwest Florida to specifically benefit the Rainbow Project in Sarasota, which provides respite services for families that are caregivers of children in Sarasota and Charlotte counties who require 24-hour individualized care,” Melvin said. “And we’ve chosen to donate money to the music therapy program at All Children’s Hospital that provides healing therapy for terminally sick kids.” Boca Grande Charities uses funds raised from the Kids Classic and partners with the Charlotte County School System to create a two-week S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) camp each year. About 80 percent of the money needed to run the camp comes from Boca Grande Charities. And the charity also partners with Lemon Bay Conservancy to award a $1,000 scholarship to a top student from the camp so he or she can pursue higher education. The scholarship is named after local conservationist Elsie Bracken. “Children are the future of our world.
