page Smith Farms co-ops with other local farmers to offer many fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. Their offerings include strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes and more. Each item will be available during it’s growing season. Smith readily admits that he is very particular about everything he does. He is determined that each item is made to his satisfaction prior to selling it. “When I decided to sell peach ice cream, I experimented and tweaked the recipe a lot” he said. “I know I made at least thirty churns of it before I got it like I wanted it” he added. Ice cream isn’t the only treat in store for you at Smith Farms. Numerous antiques are on hand to view, including a rare 1914 International Mogul Gas Engine that Smith once used to power three ice cream churns. As business at Smith Farms grew, the antique engine could no longer keep up with demand. “Since we had to churn more ice cream in a shorter amount of time we upgraded to modern machines” stated Smith. The original five gallon churns are still on display and connected to the engine. Other antiques on display include an antique hand-turned grist mill, old hand-operated farm implements and much more. One item Smith is particularly proud of is his original 1920’s era Planter’s Peanut Roaster, which is still functional and is used often to roast peanuts available for sale. Over the years, Smith has also acquired many antique candy making presses and machines. “My hope is to one day soon expand the business to include homemade candies made on Peanut Roaster page 22
