My Perspective JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • SPRING 2017 35 Nick Suszynski ’98 Over the past 14 years, I have been blessed to meet and speak with hundreds of Jesuit alumni from all eras. From as far back as 1927 (MLB Hall of Famer Al Lopez Sr.) to our most recent graduates, I am always amazed at how the Jesuit experience has so deeply shaped, and continues to infl uence, the daily lives of its graduates. For those fortunate enough to partake in the Jesuit experience, whether as an alumnus or as a parent, it’s clear that it is unique in that it’s not limited to a fi nite period of time. Nor can it be simply explained to others by the popular ‘Men for Others’ slogan that is so ingrained in our identity. Instead, it is so much more. It is an experience that, if allowed, will completely change you in the most profound way. Jesuit formation ignites, inspires, invigorates, captivates, and as one Jesuit graduate recently shared with me, “ruins you.” By this he meant that one can no longer be satisfi ed with giving anything other than his very best (“the magis”). It ruins us by never allowing us to be complacent to the needs in the world around us (“contemplative in action”). And it compels us not to be swayed by the false glitters of this world (“detachment”). Every day, Jesuit graduates honor their alma mater by sharing their experience with others through the impact they make in their communities. Some, like George Pollock Jr. ’85, whose amazing journey is featured in this issue, are living extraordinary lives. Others are leading in exemplary everyday ways, such as participating in their Church, championing worthy causes, and just doing their best, every day, to help make the world better. Though we differ greatly in many ways, we will always remain connected by the formation we received at Jesuit, and by our desire to continue to fulfi ll the school’s mission, constantly striving to become true ‘Men for Others.’ This is the impact of Jesuit High School, seen in the lives of its alumni, every day, across the globe.
