Teen Miss Lumbee Farewell As I reflect on my reign as Teen Miss Lumbee, I think back to the very beginning during my competition phase where three words come to mind; purpose, pressure, and perseverance. These factors catapulted me into yet another fairytale year as a Lumbee Ambassador; a title that I’ve been very humbled and honored to hold for my Lumbee people during 2016-2017. With that said, the end of my service is here but my platform (Teaching Everyone About Music) will carry on throughout my life as I will continue to mentor young Lumbees about the importance of music and the impact that it has had in my life. This year has been particularly special to me and somewhat emotional as I completed my senior year in high school. It was challenging to say the least; balancing a part-time job, keeping my grades up and serving my people kept me busy but humbled me as well, showing how truly blessed I am as a young Lumbee woman. Having lost my uncle Dwayne and Aunt Flossie before and after the pageant last year was especially challenging. I will never forget the laughs and jokes that they brought to my family. Most of all, I will always remember Aunt Flossie’s inspirational influence on my life; pushing me to exceed through my teenage years and shouting “Fix it Jesus” if I got out of line. I also witnessed a movement of our community coming together through volunteering to help in time of need as Hurricane Matthew devastated our area and left a sobering mark that we will never forget. Though times were tough and still are in recovery mode, we have put our full trust in God that he will never leave us or forsake us in our most desperate hour. I participated in many functions such as cultural school presentations, parades, powwows and special appearances. Always willing to travel, my trips to Cherokee and Albuquerque were highlights of the year that hold dear to my heart. Making new friends with folks from different tribes, cultural areas are and will always be a treat for me. Having a year like this was a life changing experience and I thank you, my people, for that. I can’t go on without recognizing the beautiful, talented, witty and fun loving sisters that God placed in my life this year to share in my reign: Lindsey – Where has the time gone? This year has been a blast with you. I am very thankful for the connection we gained from our reign. In you I know that I will always have not only a friend but a sister too. I can’t wait for you to embark on this next chapter in your life. I love you future Mrs. Brayboy! Kaloni – My little baller, shot caller! I’ve watched you grow into an extraordinary young lady. We’ve made some of the best memories that will last a lifetime. Your future is very bright! Knock them out girl, I love you always Loni! Kamryn – You are truly my personal mini-me! I’ve enjoyed each car ride, ice cream date, and sleepover and most importantly every second I have been able to cherish with you. You’ve been able to brighten my days when I felt my lowest. Always remember to shine and leave a little sparkle wherever you go. I love you more than you’ll ever know. Mrs. Wanda – Thank you for all your words of encouragement throughout this year. I will use them wisely. You are an amazing lady and I’m so very glad we had the opportunity to meet. As Cali Rae Turner put it – “The best thing about having a sister is that I always have a friend” . . . I love you all! My support line this year was awesome! I would not be here if it wasn’t for the loving support of my mother, father and brother. Mom, thanks for pushing me to do my best, even when I didn’t feel like it. Daddy, thanks for rounding up the sponsors and forking out the extra cash when I know you wanted to cringe! Kajun, thanks for being that loving brother that I can go to when I need to talk or just hang out. You all are my lifeline and I love you dearly. My pageant committee rocked, consisting of my Aunt Marla, Cousin Alexis, Aunt Torrey, Aunt Deidra, my voice instructor Jeanne Koonce and most importantly my Gigi, whom I love more than all the fishes in the sea. I’ll always be your “Monya” Gigi. I thank you all for that spark you gave me and the determination to excel. I am thankful also to my wonderful sponsors; Fullers Barbeque, Keli Harris Locklear and the NuBella Team, Ella and Company, MWEC Electrical Construction, Speech –N- Progress, Miss Carmen Dietrich, Prospect UMC and all the countless others. Your support was a blessing throughout the year and I was honored, humbled and thankful to have your backing. I’d like to leave with a special note to all the contestants competing this evening. I wish each and every one of you the best of luck. Remember that nothing comes easy. Always strive to achieve your ultimate goal. It’s not about winning but always doing your very best. And if you win, indulge in the moment and never forget who you are; you are Lumbee, my beautiful People of the Pines! Again, thank you all for this opportunity to serve as your 2016-2017 Teen Miss Lumbee. I will cherish it for a lifetime . . . Kenda Brooke Hunt Teen Miss Lumbee 2016-2017
