Junior Miss Farewell “Time flies, but not memories.” – ka Natassa “Be happy for this moment . . . This moment is your life!” – Omar Khayyan Wow, where do I even begin to tell about my year? First, I want to thank the creator for allowing me the opportunity to represent this year. Last year on June 28th God truly shined down on this stage and blessed me with an opportunity of a lifetime to represent some of the most smart, beautiful and resilient people. And after everything this year, all the stories from my elders and learning more about who we are I can say just like Mr. Willie “I’m Proud to be a Lumbee Indian” even more so! It has been a fun and exciting year! It has truly been a journey and a learning experience of a lifetime. I have become the young lady that I am today because of the steps that made up this journey. I have learned so much from my experiences this year. A special thank you to Millicent and John – my other parents – for being there for any questions or concerns. You truly were only one call away any time I had a question or needed anything. Momma Mil just answered me faster John. ?? Mr. Jamie and Mr. JD – Thanks for looking out for me this year at the powwows. To my powwow family – thank you for all the love and support you all have shown me. You have not seen the last of me in the circle. To my teachers and staff at school – thank you for being able to work with my crazy schedule this year. To Bobby who talked me into embarking on this journey at the last minute – I’m so glad I listened to you because I wouldn’t change this journey/experience for anything in the world. Thank you for the miracles you have worked on my head and all my chair therapy and advice! Sheana and Amber, my two big sissys – Thank you for the love, time, and dedication you have shown me this year especially during the stoning parties. Love you both! Ms. Tabitha and Mrs. Rena – Mae thank you for the beautiful regalia’s you have made for me this year. I received so many compliments on them throughout the year. Including the textile award at the Unity Conference I shared with Ms. Tabitha. Thank you for turning my visions into reality. Thanks to Mrs. Ranessa for the stunning ideas for the regalia I competed in and the leather for my shawl. NuBella Salon – thank you for making sure I always looked my absolute best. Keli and Tia you ladies ROCK! Thanks to Uncle Rod, Chuck, and Ashleigh for the small things you did from me, from letting me use the Porsche for parades to small donations… It meant the world to me. Ms. Ashley – thanks for being there for the last-minute routines. You and daddy were always pushing me to be that better dancer that you always saw deep inside and for that I am thankful! Thank you to Ms. Layla for the beautiful songs you taught us – I will always remember them and cherish them. Thank you, Mrs. Cynthia @ Cyna’s for all the stories. I have enjoyed them all and they will remain in my heart forever. Thank you to Mrs. Senora for the beautiful beaded crowns, they really do make a difference from the silver crowns and you captured us perfectly in your art. Thank you to Ella & Co. and Mr. Richard for wonderful photos this year and all the beautiful clothes that I have been able to model this year. I am here for you anytime you need a model in the tree! Dr. Carey Collins/staff and Frances Marie thanks for all the things you have done for me throughout this year. Thank you to all my supporters that have really helped me this year that I may have failed to mention. Because of you I was able to live out my dream to its fullest potential. Kam, my little fireball – I wish I had the energy to stunt, flip, and everything else like you do. Keep it up! I hope all your dreams come true… keep shooting high. Kenda – I enjoyed sharing this experience with you and I look forward to seeing your future unfold. Keep me posted about our trip to Cali! I wish you nothing but the best! Lindsey – I want to wish you and Andy the best of luck in your future. It has been an honor to serve on this court with each of you. You guys have all proven that once again, Lumbee women are some of the most beautiful, graceful, and strong women in the world! I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors Lastly Momma and Daddy – Well . . . I was definitely blessed when God gave me parents like both of you. You have no idea how thankful I am to have parents like y’all. You guys have sacrificed so much time, money, and energy for me to able to live my dream this year and for that, I will always be grateful… from burning up gas from being on the road 24/7 to making sure I’m always on point. You two always made sure I had everything I needed to make this year absolutely amazing! You both really do deserve a BEST PARENT's EVER award! Love you both to pieces! Korbyn, my brother and little soccer player, thanks for the support all year long! I love you! To whoever has the honor to hold this title next, remember these few words: Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” It has been an honor representing my strong and beautiful Lumbee people, and for the last time I am proud to say that I am your Junior Miss Lumbee 2016-2017 Kaloni Skye Walton
