“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.” “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” If dance is the expression of feeling and creativity in motion, art captures creativity on canvas. Joanna McKethan, whose grandmother proclaimed a “born artist,” has taught art in Dunn for 36 years, without interruption. In that time, Joanna estimates she has taught nearly 3,000 artists in the Dunn area, and also, for a time, in Fuquay. with her own works, as well as pieces produced by her students – in various stages of completion. with the realist art movement that is in the U.S. right now,” Joanna explained. She instructs her students in Classical Realism – a style of art which attempts to represent subject matters accurately and truthfully. The style is based on the Old Masters system of painting, which Joanna studied in Germany. But, she says she began teaching in the Dunn Library with what may be an unexpected subject. “When I started teaching in 1981, I started with cartoons. You teach the opposite things in cartooning than you teach in realistic art. You teach overemphasizing the trait.” Today, she instructs group sessions with students ranging from elementary school age to adults who have already earned art degrees and returned to continue their practice. She will even give private instruction to promising students as young as 5 years of age. that includes pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink, soft pastel, oil pastel, charcoal, gel pens, and conté.
