The New By Kelley McCarter Normal Clay Altizer, Utilization Forester, Jeremy Isom, Registered Forester, James Gray, JMG Forestry The NC Division of Society of American Foresters (SAF) and its local chapter, Sandhills SAF, recently hosted their annual summer meeting at the Dunn Shrine Club. The meeting brought in over 100 professional foresters and college students together to discuss the topic, “The New Normal” a reference to the changing economic, ecologic and cultural conditions of professional forest management in North Carolina. The Sandhills SAF chapter includes members from the counties of Anson, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, and Scotland in North Carolina. However, the meeting drew participants from all regions of North Carolina. The event takes place each June with a different local chapter in which it is convened. Both SAF members and non-members participate for a day of technical sessions with invited speaker experts and exhibitors. The meeting serves as a professional continuing education event as well as an opportunity for participants to network, socialize and renew professional friendships.
