On May 19, 2017 Cape Island was officially designated a certified Community Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The designation includes West Cape May, Cape May Point, Lower Township and Cape May. It is the third one in New Jersey, but the only one that encompasses multiple towns. The townships are getting homeowners involved by creating mini habitats on their properties that will strengthen the entire habitat network. 150 homes are now certified on Cape Island. To be included in this certification the homeowner must provide food, water, cover and a place for wildlife to raise their young using native plants and sustainable garden practices as well as no use of pesticides or chemicals in their garden. On a visit to Cape May in the fall you will be delighted by the enormous population of Monarch Butterflies in every direction, whether on the beach or throughout the town, Fall is a spectacular time to continue to enjoy the gifts of Cape May County.
