Life on Himes Briefs CENTRAL AMERICAN EDUCATION Jesuit foreign language teacher Ann Phillips earned a Maximo Nivel scholarship from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and spent two weeks in June in Antigua, Guatemala. Phillips took classes for four hours a day, and visited local sites such as the Mayan ruins of Tikal (pictured), the historic Iglesia de La Merced baroque church which opened in 1767, and Valhalla macadamia tree farm. STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS SADD club offi cers, along with moderators Lauren Maguire and Amy Martin, attended the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition Leadership Academy this summer as part of the SADD National Conference in Tampa, The club offi cers – Patrick Davis ’18, William Rodriguez ’19, Joey Rooth ’18, and Jacob Snelling ’18 – engaged with victims of destructive decisions while learning useful programs to bring back to Jesuit. BOYS STATE Seven Jesuit student leaders participated in the week-long Boys State leadership program in June at the State Capitol in Tallahassee. Seniors Jack Cullaro (House), Patrick Davis (Forum), Jimmy Emslie (Assembly), Jack Mahoney (Senate), George Morgan (Press), Tommy Pham (Forum), and Fynn Sjobeck (Assembly) took part in a mock state government, ran for offi ce, wrote and debated legislation, etc., along with about 500 other Florida high school students. Mahoney was selected one of two alternates to represent Florida at Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. EAGLE SCOUT RECOGNITION Six Jesuit Eagle Scouts were recognized at a Court of Honor on July 9 at Higgins Hall, continuing Jesuit’s long and proud tradition of Eagle Scouts at the school. Recognized at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor this summer were (L-R) Daniel Castillo ’17, Thomas Turner ’19 Thomas Chadwick ’17, Trayer Musselman ’17, Rhett Broz ’17, and Lucas Gatz ’19. DADS’ CLUB FISHING TOURNAMENT Jesuit’s second annual Dads’ Club fi shing tournament was another big success April 22, as 31 boats and 100+ anglers enjoyed chasing snook, trout, and redfi sh on a gorgeous day on Tampa Bay. The camaraderie began the Friday night before with the Captains Meeting at Jesuit. Anglers fi shed the bay throughout Saturday morning, and taking 1st place overall was Team Shockey (Jonathan Odom ’20, Jason Odom, P ’20), with Jonathan Odom ’20 also winning the Individual Grand Slam Championship. JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2017 17 BOOK GARDEN OPENING Child literacy advocate Drew Valenti ’17 opened a Book Garden at the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County on Aug. 24. Valenti used a $25,000 award he received as a Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero last season to fund the establishment of the Book Garden. An additional $25,000 gift from the Lightning was designated to fund Valenti’s education. Valenti is a freshman at Fordham University in New York. Jack Mahoney ’18 Jonathan Odom ’20
