FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Jesuit, Earlier this school year, I announced our plans for the second phase of Jesuit’s campus development, to begin in 2019. The Board of Trustees this summer approved our plans to make the showpiece of this phase a new Student Center for the Arts. The Arts Center will greatly enhance our student programs in drama, music, and visual arts. And for the fi rst time in school history we will have a proper student auditorium for grade level convocations, parent meetings, and other assemblies. Giving our students the opportunities and the setting to grow in their cultivation and appreciation of the arts also keeps faith with Jesuit education through the ages. From their beginning in the 16th century, Jesuit schools were educational leaders in the visual and performing arts. As the fi rst phase comes to a close this year, we are already making plans to dedicate and open Gonzmart Hall, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and Oliva Courtyard. Gonzmart Hall will provide a strong presence for the school on Himes Avenue as it coordinates our school administration, counseling and college admissions offi cers, and the technology department. It will provide a departmental suite for Foreign Languages, eight new classrooms and instructional spaces, as well as space for student leaders to plan their extracurricular activities. It even includes a studio for the student-run JTNN productions. The central entrance lobby will be a grand space 2 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2017 to display and recognize achievements and contributions by our students, alumni, and generous benefactors. We plan for Bishop Parkes to dedicate the Chapel of the Holy Cross during the second semester. The completion of this chapel strikes me as an important moment in Catholic ecclesiastical architecture in the state of Florida. It has been several decades since a church or chapel of this signifi cance and style has been built from the ground up in our region. The Renaissance-style chapel, with several newly commissioned works of art, will connect us with the history of the Society of Jesus and provide our student body and faculty with an Contributing photographers: Pete Young, Gigante Productions Inc., Scott Purks, Chris Zuppa, Ray Rodriguez ’91 Perspectives is a magazine for and about the students, alumni, parents, faculty, staff , friends, and supporters of Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla. The octagonal nave preserves a sense of intimacy and community that will help us continue the important tradition of morning convocation. The choir loft will provide an outstanding setting for our choir, student orchestra, and new organ. The Oliva Courtyard, stretching from the back of Gonzmart Hall to the portico of Holy Cross Chapel, will be a stately pathway for student travel between classes and activities. At its center there will be a large fountain surrounded by stone pavers inscribed with the names of our deceased alumni. There will be casual seating for the students and others in the courtyard as well. We recently celebrated our 118th birthday at Jesuit. As we prepare to enter the third decade of our second century, we do so with reverence for the past and great hope for the future. Thank you for all you do to support our mission and our students at Jesuit. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Richard C. Hermes, S.J. President
