Tennis Rhett Broz ’17 .....................Track & Field Jesuit High School athletics once again demonstrated its prowess in the classroom in 2016-17, claiming 1st place among all Class 6A boys programs in the FHSAA’s Academic Team Champion (ATC) standings in 2016-17. The Tigers, with 71 points in the ATC scoring system, easily outdistanced the boys programs at 6A runners-up Orlando Bishop Moore (46), Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy (44), and Riviera Beach Suncoast (34). In 2015-16, when classifi ed as 5A, Jesuit also fi nished fi rst in the ATC standings, 30 points ahead of Gainesville Eastside’s boys programs, 73-43. Six Jesuit teams propelled the Tigers to the title again in 2016-17 by earning 1st or 2nd place in their respective sport. Ranking No. 1 in their sport and class were basketball (head coach Neal Goldman), football (head coach Matt Thompson), and wrestling (head coach Sal Basile). Soccer (head coach Eric Sims ’95) tied for 1st place, but the tiebreaker procedure placed soccer in second. Also fi nishing in second place were bowling (head coach Ted Beil) and track & fi eld (head coach Andy Wood ’92). Among Jesuit’s 12 sports programs, soccer fi nished with the best team GPA, edging out bowling 3.622 to 3.620, with swimming in 3rd (3.600, head coach Bill Shaffer), cross country in 4th (3.517, head coach Jim Ranieri), and track & fi eld in 5th (3.505). The FHSAA calculates ATC using the cumulative grade point average of each sports team. The team GPA is then ranked against the other programs in the same classifi cation in that sport. First place merits 10 points, 2nd place is worth 9, 3rd place 8, and so on down to 1 point for 10th. Jesuit annually fi nishes among the very best boys sports programs in the FHSAA both academically and athletically, ranking at the top of both standings. In 2015-16, Jesuit fi nished fi rst in both the ATC and All-Sports Award rankings. The Jesuit High School athletic program, under the guidance of athletic director Terry Rupp ‘84, once again excelled in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s All-Sports Award rankings in 2016-17. The Tigers earned the No. 2 spot among all boys sports programs in Class 6A; No. 1 among all boys sports programs in the Tampa Bay area once again, an annual occurrence; and the No. 6 ranking statewide among all Florida schools in all classifi cations. Leading the way for Jesuit was the State runner-up baseball team (head coach Miguel Menendez), and the District and Region champion football (Matt Thompson), swimming (Bill Shaffer), and tennis (Joe Curtis) teams. The Tigers also claimed District championships in golf (Nico Hohman ’07), basketball (Neal Goldman), and soccer (Eric Sims ’95), with golf and soccer fi nishing as Region runners-up. Over the past four school years, Jesuit has claimed District titles in 39 of 48 opportunities. For years, Jesuit has topped the FHSAA’s all-sports standings among all local schools, and in 2013-14 Jesuit ranked No. 1 among all schools in Florida.
