Nora Holmes (10) has a love for all animals and became curious about sea turtles after a recent beach trip. She decided to research these animals as a self-guided project at her school, R School Lakeland. She found that sea turtles are endangered and many baby sea turtles are killed by predators while attempting to reach the ocean. Nora designed a protective device to increase the chances of sea turtle survival. Her invention utilizes a clear plastic box with airholes and a lifting door, which can be placed over then nest after eggs are laid to prevent predators from disturbing it. Then, when it is close to hatching time, a clear plastic tunnel, similar to a hamster tunnel, can be attached to the box and anchored out in the surf, providing safe passage to the baby turtles. Nora is excited about presenting her prototype soon.
