The return of the fall season is often accompanied by the return of my appetite. The heat of summer steers me toward lighter fare, but the fall awakens my love for comfort food, red wine and the outside world. The next few months in Pensacola offer a variety of adventures for local foodies. From high-end food and wine on the beach to authentic Greek and southern seafood staples downtown, there is plenty to eat and do this fall in Pensacola. We’ve covered a few upcoming festivals and we even bring you recipes from the Pensacola celebrity chefs who will be headlining at A Taste of the Beach later this month. I hope you are inspired to get out and enjoy our culture, food and cooling weather. Foodies will also enjoy reading about Go Retro’s downtown tasting tours. They offer three different walking tours in which participants can taste their way through some of Pensacola’s best restaurants. It’s a great way to try out a variety of dining options without breaking the bank. We also talk to Nick Phoenix at Coldwater Gardens and get some excellent advice for growing your own shiitaké mushrooms. These savory delights can be quite expensive, so growing your own is a fun and affordable alternative. Want to add a little cultural zing to your nightly dinners? Visit one of our local ethnic grocers for the unique ingredients necessary to tour the tastes of the world in your own kitchen. Wonder what goes best with your favorite wine or beer? Josh Newby has compiled that information for you in an easy to read graphic format. While we spend the fall indulging our food addictions, let’s be sure to remember, and help, those who are less fortunate. Many families in our community go hungry, but one local organization is working hard to fill every pantry in the Pensacola. Read all about Feeding the Gulf Coast and learn how you can help support their good works. I hope you enjoy this delicious issue of Pensacola Magazine. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
