The view outside my window at University Campus is simple and serene—a sloping lawn down to beautiful Lake Jovita. But the real view outside my window stretches north to Virginia, west to California, and, yes, into thousands of homes, offices, and coffee shops wherever our Center for Online Learning students choose to “plug in.” For as simple and serene as the view is out my window, I see well beyond the lake to a national and international university with students, alumni, and faculty spread across the globe. It’s a beautiful sight that I hope to share with you from time to time. 44 FALL 16 Spirit Magazine The View outside My Window By Denny Moller “Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things can not be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” —Mark Twain This simple quote by Mark Twain speaks to the impact Saint Leo University has across the globe. From Tampa Bay across the Gulf to Corpus Christi, TX, from the Virginia Tidewater to San Diego, CA, and all of the “fl yover” country in between, there are Lions. Internationally, we have students and alumni from as close as Canada and Jamaica to Congo and Uzbekistan. They are international Lions, but still Lions. Saint Leo Lions make a diff erence every day and in places you may not expect. Unlike their namesake, they do not roar about their accomplishments. In the Benedictine tradition, they lead simply by example as they use their Saint Leo education to teach, work in business, deliver social services, keep our neighborhoods safe, and make a diff erence in thousands of other ways each day. There is a quiet strength in lions. Lions are the only cat species that forms social groups. Saint Leo Lions follow this tradition of coming together and caring for each other. Well over 300 current Lions receive private scholarship help from alumni Lions. Saint Leo Lions raised more than $50,000 during A Day for Saint Leo in November 2015. Alumni representatives attended all 18 graduation ceremonies to welcome 2016 graduates to the alumni association and perform the turning of the tassel ceremony. I stand in awe of those who actively engage in supporting Saint Leo. And I invite those who haven’t yet joined their fellow alumni on this road to start the journey. The Saint Leo pride travels the road together. God bless, Denny Moller Vice President of Advancement and Communications
