This can be confusing since there are so many out there now, and they are advertising like crazy. Every hardware manufacture and software company has their own cloud now. In a nutshell, the cloud is a server based storage location that is provided by your software or hardware manufacture. This is basically space to save your files and data, mainly in the case of a failure. For example, one could have a cloud account set up on a smartphone or tablet to back up photos in case the device is destroyed or lost. This is also a nice feature if you have multiple devices, they can all share the same cloud account so when you take a photo on one device, you can see it on the other and so forth. The cloud is a nice option to keep backups of your irreplaceable data. Anyone who has used these devices knows the nightmare of losing data. The hard drive on your computer or your mobile device can die at any time, losing everything you had on that device. Back up as often as you can, external hard drives or the cloud, it is heartbreaking to lose those photos and videos of family and friends, as well as contacts and other data. (Clue: Eric wasn’t found at home.) Also something to mention, there is also the risk of the cloud. Some may have heard of cases when a cloud server gets hacked, which is possible. The cloud is a server that is running in a data room somewhere and anything can be hacked. This is not to say we shouldn’t be using the cloud, but I would recommend that you do not store any confidential files on the cloud for this reason. Don’t store anything on the cloud with your social security number or bank account numbers, addresses, etc. Keep your confidential data private, store it on an external hard drive and put it in a safe, lock box, or safety deposit box.
