216 Glossary A Abs olute Pressure: The total surrounding pressure and the result when atmospheric pressure is added to gauge or water pressure. Act ual Dive Time: The total time spent under water from the beginning of descent until breaking the surface at the end of the dive. The precautionary decompression stop need not be included. Adj usted Maximum Dive Time: The Maximum Dive Time for a specific depth minus the Residual Nitrogen Time for a specific letter group and depth. Alt ernate Air Source: An additional second stage regulator that provides air to a diver’s buddy in an emergency. A true alternate air source is a completely independent unit consisting of a cylinder and regulator. See also Octopus Regulator. ADT: Actual Dive Time. Air Embolism: The blockage of blood flow in the body by bubbles in the blood. Am bient Pressure: The total surrounding pressure. See absolute pressure. AMDT: Adjusted Maximum Dive Time. Alv eoli: The air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Atm ospheric Pressure: The pressure exerted by the atmosphere. B Bac k Flotation System: A buoyancy control device whose entire bladder is behind the diver and does not wrap around the diver in any way. Bac kpack: A piece of equipment designed to hold a scuba cylinder on a diver’s back, usually integral with the buoyancy compensator. Bac kup Scuba: A redundant second stage or total scuba unit for use in out of air situations. BC: Buoyancy Compensator. Ben ds: Another name for one type of decompression sickness. Bez el: A movable ring on a compass or watch inscribed with index marks. On a watch, the ring can be rotated only counterclockwise and is used to measure elapsed time. Buo yancy: An upward force on an object placed in water that is equal to the weight of the water displaced. Loosely, buoyancy is applied to the net state of an object, such as “positive buoyancy” for an object that floats. Buo yancy Compensator: A piece of equipment that can provide increased volume by adding air to a bladder, thus providing lift. Buo yancy Jacket: A buoyancy control device shaped and worn like a vest. Boy le’s Law: Statement of a physical principle – The inverse relationship between pressure and volume of a gas. Bud dy System: The practice of never diving alone. You always have someone to assist you, if necessary, and with whom to share experiences. C C-Card: Certification card. Car bon Monoxide Toxicity: A risk or condition that results from breathing air contaminated with carbon monoxide. Car dio-pulmonary Resuscitation: The firstaid procedure that sustains ventilation and pulse until a person’s heart and breathing resume on their own or until other medical procedures can be initiated.
