Beach Exits Procedures for beach exits vary greatly depending on the situation and the conditions. You must evaluate the condition of the exit area and the steps of your exit before you proceed with your exit. Calm Water When you do a beach exit in calm water, swim towards shore until you are about waist deep. Stand up and use your buddy’s shoulder and the figure four position to remove your fins. Walk out of the water. Surf When you are exiting through surf, you must concentrate on your exit procedures. Keep your regulator in your mouth. Hold your mask on. Never stop in the surf zone. If the surf is rough, swim until you can crawl out of the water on your hands and knees (figure 3-35). Once you are clear of the water, you can roll over and remove your fins. Rock Jetties or Breakwaters With rock exits, you reverse your entry procedure. If you put your gear on in the water, you need to take it off in the water and hand it out to your buddy. When approaching the rock you are going to use to exit, use the wave action so that the water movement will help you get onto the exit area.
