n anniversary with a “0” on the end is an irresistible invitation to reminisce, to reflect on how much has happened over the years, and to appreciate (hopefully) how much better things have become. To be sure, I’ve indulged in a little bit of that as I prepare for my 20th season as Music Director of the Pensacola Symphony. Twenty years ago it would have been a stretch to imagine the powerful and expressive orchestra that now fills the stage, the gorgeously restored Saenger Theatre with its splendid acoustics, or the the top-flight guest artists and landmark orchestral literature that routinely appear on our programs. It has, indeed, been a wonderful run for the PSO. But the most exciting thing at the PSO these days is not how far we’ve come; it’s how far we are poised to go. For the last twenty years at least (and I’m guessing quite a bit longer) the unique strength of the PSO has come from the community that supports us. This is the orchestra’s 91st season, a fact that speaks volumes about Pensacola’s arts culture. And as the community has nurtured us for more than nine decades, we in turn are expanding and deepening our commitment to the community, building the bridges that will ensure that music is a part of Pensacola’s life for many decades to come. On a personal note, I feel profoundly grateful to this orchestra and this community. Every performer needs an artistic home, a place where we can deepen our understanding, explore new ideas, and – most importantly – share our music in a way that makes a difference. My wife and I are both deeply gratified to have found our home in Pensacola, and the orchestra and I look forward to sharing wonderful music with you for years to come.
