Gaffney Highlights The Peachoid is a 135-foot structure that functions as a one million gallon water tank and as an iconic landmark that draws attention to one of Gaffney’s major agricultural products. The Peachoid can be seen from Interstate 85 and from SC Route 11. Each year, hundreds of visitors stop in Millwood Park, at the base of the water tank, to take photos of and with the unique landmark. Readers Digest included the water tower on its list of America’s 100 Best Adventures. The Peachoid was recently featured in the Netflix series House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey as a U.S. Senator from Gaffney, SC. The Gaffney Board of Public Works maintains both the Peachoid and Millwood Park. A free, informational brochure about the Peachoid and directions to the site are available from the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery, 210 West Frederick Street. The Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway (State Route 11) is designated by the U. S. Secretary of Transportation as one of the nation’s Scenic Byways. Following an ancient path traveled by the Cherokee people, this two lane road covers 112-miles of diverse scenery. Awesome views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, make this one of the best scenic drives in the United States. Local points of interest include the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery, the Peachoid, peach orchards, cotton fields, and the Cowpens National Battlefield. The northern end of the highway is located in downtown Gaffney, and the southern end is at Exit 1, just beyond the SC/GA border. The Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery offers a free, award-winning travel guide that contains a map and descriptions of the many interesting things to see and do along this route. Revolutionary War Weekend activities are held at various sites during the first weekend in October. National parks within Cherokee County host battlefield tours, living history encampments, weapons firing demonstrations, and ceremonies to commemorate the military actions that took place here in October of 1780. Each autumn, hundreds of participants retrace the route that backcountry militia men traveled to meet and defeat Major Patrick Ferguson and his Loyalist forces on Kings Mountain. Following an encampment at Cowpens National Battlefield, these Overmountain Victory Trail marchers arrive in downtown Gaffney for story-telling at the Gaffney Cabin and salutes at the gravesite of Col. James Williams. On October 6, the Night Before Kings Mountain battlefield tour is conducted by lantern light at Cowpens National Battlefield. On the anniversary of the battle, wreath-laying ceremonies are conducted at the monument in Kings Mountain National Military Park. Information on Revolutionary War Weekend and brochures describing Revolutionary War sites in Cherokee County are available from the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery, 210 West Frederick Street. www.getintogaffney.com • #GetN2GaffneySC • page 13
