population, others opposed any sort of hunt. The twoday hunt killed 304 bears throughout Florida. Staunch opposition grew because authorities’ numbers showed that 21 percent of the female bears were lactating at the time of their deaths. The FWC decided to postpone any more bear hunting in 2016. But future hunting could come up again in 2017. Holding off on a hunt allows the FWC time to work with stakeholders and community members to better develop the role that hunting plays in the state’s management program. The hunt was helpful in some ways. The hunt permit sales reached nearly $377,000 and that money is being used to help pay for the reduction of human and bear conflicts through Waste Management efforts in the Estates, including the Bear Wise program.
