Understanding the ‘Still Life’ By Kimmie Tubre No one knows the answers better than Darcy Malone. As the daughter of The Radiators’ lead guitarist, Dave Malone, Darcy decided to follow her dreams, which just so happened to involve music. “My dad is my musical hero,” Darcy said, paying homage to her famous father, “He has such a presence on a stage. I still cannot watch him do his thing without a grin on my face from ear to ear He is the example of everything I strive to be as a musician.” Darcy’s mother, Suzy Malone, also had a huge impact on her career. She was one of the founding members of the Pfister Sisters, a trio of New Orleans vocalists who sing in the harmonious, three-part style of the legendary Boswell Sisters and have performed widely across the U.S. and Europe. Suzy sang with the group for its first 20 years before pursuing a career with Darcy Malone Not every child decides to follow in their and dreams instead. But, what if you come from a musical family? Not just any musical family, but a dynamic one. One in which both of your parents are musicians, your father is a living legend, and everyone in the family has an immense talent and love for music. Although Darcy obviously admires her parents, she doesn't seek to emulate them. She continues to create music that is true to her. She has honed her own style and sound in a way that can be described as “feel good, soul-funk-rock with a multitude of pizazz.” Growing up in a musical family with her talented parents had its own unique parents’ footsteps. They often realize that they have different goals and dreams and they follow those goals attributes, as Darcy recalled from her childhood. “While other families were going to Little League games, with dinner on the table at 5, I was watching my parents do their work. I frequented clubs, festivals and studios as a child, but to me it was normal.” While Darcy’s childhood was not average, she was still able to create a balance between music and family. This balance has been very helpful in her adult life where she is not only a singer and songwriter with her husband, guitarist Christopher Boye, but also a devoted mother to her 4 year old son, Elliot. Not surprisingly, Elliot happens to love music 14 | BREAKTHRU MEDIA | breakthrumediamagazine.com JANUARY / F E B R UARY 2 0 1 7
