Shapiro “SOMEBODY SCREAM!” Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. shouts from the stage, pointing the microphone toward the large crowd amassed in front of him. The crowd responds with deafening screams as they enthusiastically wave their arms in the air while dancing in place to the music of the band backing up its leader. Gyrating wildly all over the stage, doing an occasional split and exhorting his band members to turn up the heat, Dopsie Jr. has his large outdoor audience right where he wants them. He has a call-and-response going to the Chris Kenner song, “Land of A Thousand Dances” and the audience is whipped up to a frenzy by an electrifying performance. “Man, that’s what I really love most,” Dopsie Jr. said proudly, reflecting on that performance and others like it during a quiet backstage moment two hours before a recent gig with his band, the Zydeco Twisters. “I love getting my audience worked up and having a good time.
