WELCOME, BAHATI! Our new male African lion, Bahati, arrived on November 28 and we can’t wait for you to meet him! After completing a routine medical quarantine, Bahati is being introduced to Ina, our lioness. Keepers expect the introduction to progress smoothly and that Bahati will join Ina in the lion habitat when we open on April 22. Bahati came to Fort Wayne from the Racine Zoo,where he was one of three cubs born on July 7, 2014. His move was recommended by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, which seeks to maximize genetic diversity in rare species under human care. Wild African lions are under threat from human activity. Only about 20,000 remain in Africa, down from 100,000 just 20 years ago. With your help, we support the Lion Guardians program to protect wild lions in Kenya.
