Hamilton Medical Center Volunteer Receives Veteran of the Year Award Gary, who is a U.S. Navy veteran, led the American Legion in the Dalton Veteran’s Day parade and then was honored at a luncheon immediately afterwards. American Legion Singers entertained the group. “Veteran of the Year recognizes what you do for other veterans,” says Gary. For the past two years, Gary has volunteered two days a week at Hamilton Medical Center. As part of the American Legion Honor Guard, he helps to provide funeral and graveside ceremonies. Gary serves on the Post 112 executive board and is the Junior Vice Commander. “I was in the Navy from 1960 to 1964. Then I drove trucks for thirty years. In my retirement years, I wanted to help people. There are so many places to volunteer, I suggest that you find the opportunity that is right for you. Gary Benson, Hamilton Medical Center volunteer, also serves on the Post 112 American Legion Honor Guard in Dalton, Georgia. This past November, on Veterans Day, he was named Veteran of the Year. The Veteran of the Year award recognizes one veteran in the community who consistently goes above and beyond in his or her service to other veterans. This can be accomplished through leadership and/or community service. “This award is granted to the person the Post believes does the most for the veterans,” says John Wilson, Post Adjutant. The following criteria is required for an individual to receive this special award: • Honorably discharged or retired from the U.S. Military or National Guard • Whitfield County resident • Made significant contributions to veterans since his or her discharge that’s right for you.
