charges at the merchant and throws him to the ground. Since the rose garden is his prized possession, the Beast is furious. The Beast roars that the Merchant must pay for stealing his precious roses. The Merchant explains the rose is for his daughter, as it is the one gift she asked of him. The Beast demands that the Merchant bring his daughter to the castle and if the Merchant fails to do so, he and his whole family will perish. Scene 6: The Merchant’s Country Cottage The Merchant rushes back to his cottage and explains the terrible dilemma. Beauty insists on returning to the Beast’s castle with her father. The Merchant and Beauty bid farewell to Pride and Avarice. Scene 7: Journey to the Beast’s Castle Beauty and her father travel back to the castle and without warning, the Beast leaps in their path. Beauty faints in terror and her father flees. With Beauty in his arms, the Beast returns to the castle. Scene 8: Inside the Castle As she sleeps, Beauty dreams of a mysterious and handsome prince. When she awakes, Beauty discovers a grand castle with books, a golden gown and all the riches of the castle for her amusement. Every evening as the Beast and Beauty dine, the Beast asks Beauty to marry him. Though she has grown fond of the Beast, she refuses because she does not truly love him. One night, Beauty dreams that her father is ill. Beauty pleads with the Beast to let her visit her father. The Beast allows her to go, but warns her that if she does not return in seven days, he will die of a broken heart. She promises to return in a week.
