This workshop provides resources that will help all volunteer coordinators find the volunteers they need, manage the volunteers they have, create cohesion and harmony among volunteers and staff, turn challenging volunteers into productive advocates and develop fun ways to celebrate and appreciate the entire team. Presenters: Anne Oliver, Director of Volunteer Services, Marin Humane Society; Jeanne Saadi, Manager of Animal Services, City of Mesquite, Texas Tackling the top five volunteer program challenges by leveraging 12,000 voices Wednesday, May 10,1:30 p.m.—3:00 p.m. This workshop will present suggestions for improving your volunteer program based on attitude and assessment data from more than 12,000 volunteers at more than 100 shelters. From this data, we have identified common strengths and problem areas that volunteer programs face. The workshop will be highly interactive; as a group, we will brainstorm potential solutions to improve these challenge areas. Attendees will leave with ideas and solutions which will prove highly useful to their own shelters. Managing volunteers without losing your mind Wednesday, May 10, 3:30 p.m.—5:00 p.m. You have the infrastructure, plans and management in place, but are you prepared for the human element of engaging volunteers? Volunteers need care and feeding too—some more than others! In this workshop, we’ll explore the people aspects of volunteer program management, such as helping volunteers overcome resistance to change, coaching volunteers through behavior or interpersonal issues, ensuring alignment with the organization’s culture, procedures and expectations and even letting a volunteer go when necessary. Presenters: Hilary Hager, Director of Volunteer Management, The Humane Society of the United States; Betsy McFarland, Principal, Adisa Consulting Standing shoulder to shoulder Thursday, May 11, 9:00 a.m.—10:30 a.m. Volunteer managers have an essential function in creating and maintaining an effective volunteer program. However, once the volunteers have been on-boarded and put to work, it’s usually other staff who are responsible for directing and supervising volunteers in their day-to-day activities. This session will explore the staff-volunteer dynamic and ways to truly prepare staff to have productive and engaging relationships with volunteers based on mutual respect and a collaborative spirit to help increase both staff and volunteer satisfaction. Presenters: Hilary Hager, Director of Volunteer Engagement, The Humane Society of the United States; Catherine Lovella, Volunteer Program Supervisor, Irvine Animal Care Center Using volunteers to help run your volunteer program Thursday, May 11, 2:00 p.m.—3:30 p.m. Volunteer “mentors” can help successfully manage and grow your volunteer program. This session will discuss important qualities to identify as you select potential mentors, the role of a mentor and what to include in a volunteer mentor job description. Learn techniques for increasing the involvement of mentors and integrating them into your entire team and gain tools to help you use technology and other strategies for making the mentor program work. Presenter: Megan Webb, Executive Director, Animal Welfare League of Alexandria Tap into the power of youth and create leaders for today and tomorrow Friday, May 12, 9:30 a.m.—11:00 a.m. Young people represent huge potential in animal protection. Learn how to engage, support and encourage youth volunteers in your shelter or rescue or through community involvement. By guiding the next generation of leaders, we hope that others will follow them. Presenters: Rachel Howard, Volunteer Manager, Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society; Corey Roscoe, Ohio State Director, The Humane Society of the United States Mission reunite: How to utilize volunteers to recover lost pets Friday, May 12, 11:30 a.m.—1:00 p.m. Lost pets who are not reunited with their owners are a major contributing factor to the homeless, feral and shelter pet populations. Delegating this work to trained volunteers can help increase RTO rates, decrease intake rates and provide rewarding work for shelter volunteers. Come learn about one of the most successful shelter lost pet recovery programs and how implementing these services will keep your volunteers happy, busy and successful in returning lost pets to the families who love them.
