Is Your Organization Healthy? PHOTO BY MICHELLE RILEY/THE HSUS Effective and healthy organizations have long recognized that we need to take care of our people so that they can take care of our organizations and the animals. The HSUS has partnered with organizational science experts at the University of North Carolina Charlotte to offer four unique tools that help animal welfare organizations assess and enhance their people care. Visit animalsheltering.org/assess for links to the following tools. People Practices Self-Check (PPSC) You spend tremendous amounts of time and energy improving the health and welfare of your shelter’s animals, but what about the staff you rely on to do the work? The PPSC is a free online tool that will help you identify opportunities to promote the growth and success of your animal shelter’s human resources. Rescue Group Program Assessment (RGPA) Volunteers are the lifeblood of rescue groups, who often don’t have paid staff. But without a highly effective volunteer program, rescues can’t operate at their full life-saving potential. RGPA is a free online tool that assesses a rescue’s volunteer program and provides concrete steps to improve the organization’s effectiveness. Shelter Employee Engagement & Development Survey (SeeDS) This comprehensive employee engagement survey provides an affordable option for municipal and private animal shelters that want to take a deeper look at their overall effectiveness. The HSUS subsidizes this service in order to keep it affordable. Volunteer Program Assessment (VPA) The VPA helps shelters evaluate their volunteer program from the perspective of volunteers, using a comprehensive and validated volunteer attitudes and engagement survey. HSUS scholarships keep the VPA free to shelters.
