Who we are & what we do Celebrating animals and confronting cruelty is the mission of The Humane Society of the United States, and we’ve been doing it for more than 60 years. We’re ending large-scale abuses of pets and wildlife, easing the suffering of animals on factory farms and helping local organizations end pet homelessness in their communities. To that end, our pioneering Pets for Life program is changing the landscape for pet resource access in underserved communities by providing critical services, such as sterilization and vaccinations. With the help of PetSmart Charities and others, Pets for Life is now operating in 34 communities nationwide. Breed bans and restrictions founded on myths and misinformation force dogs out of homes and into shelters, taking up kennel space and resources that could be used for animals who are truly homeless. The HSUS is working to help you overturn these harmful laws to make communities safer for both dogs and people. Cats still make up the majority of animals euthanized in shelters, and of the 30-40 million community cats in the U.S., only about 2 percent are sterilized. The HSUS promotes best practices and progressive strategies for supporting and managing community (feral and stray) cats, making shelter cats happier and keeping cats in homes by focusing on behavior and retention strategies. Through The Shelter Pet Project and our Humane State program—both supported by Maddie’s Fund—as well as our Emergency Placement Partners program, The HSUS is committed to empowering local animal shelters and rescues to increase the number of lives saved and ensure we reach the day when no companion animal suffers for lack of a home or care.
