FOREIGN TRADE ZONE 20 EXPANSION In 1975, the federal government established FTZ 20 in Norfolk, centered by the Port of Virginia. The zone service area includes the Viriginia counties of Accomack (partial), Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Northampton, Southampton, Sussex, Surry and York; and includes the cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg. A proposal submitted by the Port Authority in May of 2016 sought to reorganize FTZ 20 and expand it by including eligible areas of the North Carolina counties of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Pasquotank and Perquimans; and the city of Elizabeth City. The U.S. Department of Commerce granted approval. “This is an incentive that can be used to attract business to the port and investment and jobs to locations within the FTZ,” said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority (VPA). “The benefits of the FTZ can be significant and this decision opens the door in northeast North Carolina to those benefits. This gives companies that are considering an investment or expansion another reason to implement their decision.” For more information visit: thinkcurrituck.com 16 Currituck Chamber of Commerce Image provided by Currrituck County Economic Development Compassionate Care The Hallmark of The Outer Banks Hospital It’s what you can expect of your community hospital.
